How the magic happens
If we had a penny for every time someone asked us the secret behind the perfect single malt… we wouldn’t quite be cashing in our investments to retire to a super yacht on the Med, but you get the picture. It’s the question that intrigues us all; how can four simple elements: barley, yeast, water and wood, combine to produce such complex and diverse results?
In his Miscellany of Whisky, Charles MacLean concludes: “Of all the factors that influence the flavour of Scotch Whisky, the cask in which the whisky matures is probably the most potent.” We wouldn’t disagree. Yet on our tasting odyssey across Scotland’s renowned whisky regions, we sampled so many casks identical on paper, yet contrasting on the palette. Our conclusion? Only alchemy holds the answer!
